| Melatonin is a hormone, the primary signaling chemical that keeps us in sync with the natural day night cycle. It is the keeper of our internal clock that tells the brain when it's time to sleep. Melatonin is made from tryptophan and low levels of either affect our sleeping patterns. Melatonin supplements can: . Help in jet lag recovery . Help with insomnia . Reset the body clock for shift workers . Protect against the effects of stress . Also protect the brain against free radical damage
| Melatonin is the primary hormone that controls our patterns of wakefulness and sleep. The production of this hormone in the pineal gland is triggered by the lowering of light levels. When the sun goes down and the level of light is reduced, the level of melatonin in the body begins to increase. In the early morning, it peaks and then slowly starts to decrease at about the time most people wake up (between 6 and 8 AM ). When the light goes down, melatonin levels go up. When the sun comes up or when we turn on the light, within 30 minutes of exposure to bright light, melatonin levels drop significantly. So the rise of melatonin in the evening is a signal to go to sleep, and the drop of melatonin in the morning activates the wake-up cycle. If our levels of melatonin are low or if we have jet lag, a melatonin supplement can be taken to support natural sleep. Another important function of melatonin is resetting the body clock. The process of resetting our inner clock neutralizes the effects of the day's stress on our endocrine system which regulates our hormones. When we don't have enough melatonin secretion at night, the stress on the endocrine system is carried forward into the next day. If we're not getting a surge of melatonin each evening to reset our clock, the effects of stress begin to accumulate. This qualifies melatonin as an important form of protection from the damaging effects of stress. Note : the amount of melatonin we need to take in order to obtain this effect is usually modest. Also, the time release form is essential to mimic the bodies natural pattern of melatonin production. |

| Dosage and Directions This product is a 1.2mg time-released tablet. The time-released form of melatonin is critical because it more closely mimics the body's secretion of this hormone. For long-term use, we usually recommend 1 tablet at bedtime. For jet lag start with 1 or 2 tablets taken at the new local bedtime. Up to 4 tablets can be taken each evening until you are adjusted to the new time zone, then you can cut back the dose. Melatonin is usually taken with tryptophan for jet lag. For insomnia we generally emphasis Tryptophan as the main supplement but some people like to add 1 tablet of Time Release Melatonin to be taken with the Tryptophan. The Jet Lag Program Tryptophan ? 30 minutes before dinner and at bedtime ? 1 or 2 capsules each time. If you've taken one capsule of tryptophan and it's not working, take a second. Melatonin ? 30 minutes before bedtime ? 1.2 mg Time Release - 1 or 2 tablets. When using melatonin as part of a jet lag program, it is important to go to bed at the new local bedtime, even if you feel like staying awake. Taking tryptophan at dinner, and at the local bedtime, raises serotonin levels. The serotonin in combination with melatonin provides the body with "time for sleep" signals. You will probably find that you feel naturally relaxed and ready to fall asleep about half an hour after the second dose of tryptophan. Once you begin to feel sleepy at the appropriate time, you can cut back or stop the tryptophan and melatonin. How do you know if it's working At low doses and used for anti aging purposes, people rarely experience any direct effects of melatonin. If used as part of a jet lag or sleep protocol, its effect is additive to the other supplements in the program. Special Considerations Melatonin is a hormone and can affect the body in very powerful ways, so it must be used carefully. Please consider the following points: Melatonin hangover - Although probably affecting less than 10% of those who use melatonin, the most common complaint is grogginess or a hung over feeling experienced the next day. This is a sign that the dose is too high or that the individual cannot tolerate melatonin. If you experience this effect, cut the dose in half to see if that makes a difference. We have seen cases of individuals that did well with ½ mg but 1 mg was too much. This Melatonin 1.2 mg is considered a low dose but some people may need to cut the tablet in half, or not take it all. Melatonin induced depression - This is far less common but does occur. If you have become depressed and are taking a significant melatonin dose stop it immediately to see if that is related to your moods. Melatonin should never be given to children or adolescents. Should be used only under medical supervision by those with a history of seizure disorders.
| I was a consultant to the company that first introduced melatonin to the market. Within a year, melatonin was the biggest-selling nutritional supplement in the country. Whole new companies were founded and flourished just on melatonin sales alone. I think that melatonin's success was primarily due to its helpfulness with insomnia and the fact that the previous primary supplement for this, tryptophan, had been pulled from the market. In my role as a consultant, I had access to the research on melatonin and communicated with hundreds of doctors utilizing melatonin in their clinical practices, as well as my own subsequent clinical experience over the years in working with clients. There are a couple of points that I learned. First, that the doses of melatonin required are actually very low. For sleep assistance, we now rely primarily on tryptophan to increase serotonin levels and only occasionally add small doses of melatonin (such as the product offered here). Melatonin is particularly helpful for jet lag. There are several well designed studies with professional basketball players showing clear-cut faster recovery from jet lag. The athletes flew frequently to their games and usually played while under the effect of jet lag. They definitely played better when using melatonin. The dose they used in the research was 8 mg a night but this dose is probably higher than required if also using tryptophan. One of the most exciting discoveries with regard to melatonin occurred after the product was already a runaway success as a nutritional supplement. That was the discovery that melatonin is one of the most powerful and efficient antioxidants. It protects the brain against a dangerous free radical ? the hydroxyl radical ? at very low doses. This antioxidant function added to the importance of melatonin as an anti-aging supplement. In any hormone supplementation it is best to come as close as possible to the bodies natural rhythm of producing the hormone. The Time Release Melatonin we use has been demonstrated to reliably release melatonin at a rate similar to the bodies' natural pattern. * These statements have not been evaluated by the U.S. Food and Drug administration. | | Tryptophan - This amino acid is the precursor to serotonin. Low serotonin levels are a major factor in insomnia and mood issues.
| Our moods and sleep are regulated by powerful brain chemistry, particularly serotonin, one of our most important neurotransmitters. Low serotonin levels have been identified as a cause of depression in hundreds of research studies. Serotonin is made in the brain from tryptophan, an essential amino acid. Tryptophan is the raw material the brain requires to make serotonin. Tryptophan is a component of most proteins. Unfortunately, stress can deplete tryptophan. A number of other factors can also lead to tryptophan deficiencies, which in turn result in low levels of serotonin. Extensive research has shown that tryptophan supplements raise serotonin levels. By using a nutritional supplement, we are simply providing the raw material the body needs to produce serotonin. Raising serotonin is a vital step in addressing depression, anxiety, PMS mood swings, and insomnia. The ability of tryptophan to support the body's production of this absolutely critical neurotransmitter is what makes tryptophan such an important, sought-after nutritional product. | | | | | |
